When a Hydraulic Oil Leak Becomes a Fire Hazard: How a Custom Guard Solved the Problem

Fleet ManagementForkliftsKonecranes

In a coil handling environment, a hydraulic oil leak is not just a maintenance issue. When hot coils are nearby, leaked oil becomes a fire risk, and that changes everything about how urgently the problem needs to be solved.

Why the Same Leak Kept Coming Back From the Same Spot

The lift trucks in this fleet were developing hydraulic oil leaks at the load lock valve on the front end. The hose connects directly to the load lock valve, and the leak kept appearing in the same location every time. It was not a random failure. The root cause was that the tensioner bar was too short. The heat was getting to the valve.

How a Custom-Fabricated Guard Eliminated the Problem

The solution was to build a larger defense for the load lock valve. A bigger guard was fabricated and positioned so that at normal operating height, the guard would take the heat before the valve. The leaks stopped, and the downtime associated with this specific failure dropped significantly.
