You are the person most responsible for your own safety, so keep your head in the game and watch out for coworkers. Staying aware of what is happening around you prevents the assumptions that lead to serious incidents.
How Do You Stay Situationally Aware?
Assume nothing and keep communicating.
- Never assume a driver or equipment operator will see you
- Do not assume your supervisor or coworker knows you are there
- Avoid making assumptions
- Pay attention to what is going on around you
- Communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and contractors
What Happens When Awareness Slips?
An experienced laborer was killed when a gasoline storage tank exploded as he was cutting it with a portable power saw. He was used to installing, removing, and junking gasoline pumps and underground tanks, but he failed to adequately purge the tank and test for vapors before beginning work, and the explosion propelled him 10 to 15 feet into another tank.
How Do You Build Safe Habits?
Treat every task as if it can still hurt you.
- Do not fall into a routine mindset of having done this a million times
- Have a plan of action
- Understand the possible hazards
- Keep practicing situational awareness
