What Are the Best Tips for Backing Up a Vehicle Safely?

SafetyToolbox Talks

According to the National Safety Council, one out of four vehicle accidents can be blamed on poor backing techniques. Using safe backing practices helps prevent these accidents on the job.

How Do You Prevent Backing Incidents?

Look first, signal, and move slowly every time you back up.

  • Know your blind spots
  • Choose easy-exit parking spaces
  • Perform a walk-around to check for coworkers, potholes, hazards, and other dangers
  • Treat every backing situation as new and different, and stay watchful each time
  • Use a spotter when available
  • Use your backup alarm if your vehicle has one, and use the horn to signal backing if it does not
  • Use your mirrors and backup camera
  • Move slowly

Do not back a vehicle up unless you are certain it is safe and clear.
