  • Use situational awareness and watch for drivers weaving, driving erratically, or otherwise driving unsafely
  • Slow down and give other drivers space
  • Drive defensively
  • Stay sober or use a designated driver
  • Use car services like a taxi or rideshare
  • Research free-ride services ahead of time and make arrangements

How Do You Keep Guests Safe if You Host?

A few precautions protect your guests and you.

  • Never shoot firearms into the air, since what goes up must come down
  • Offer plenty of snacks to slow alcohol consumption, while avoiding salty snacks
  • Offer non-alcoholic drinks and plenty of water
  • Use different colored cups to mark alcoholic versus non-alcoholic drinks, and dump unattended drinks to keep minors from consuming them
  • Stop serving alcohol several hours before the party ends
  • When serving champagne, keep it chilled to at least 45 degrees so the cork is less likely to pop unexpectedly, and hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle away from people when opening
