How Do You Safely Store Oil and Fluids?

SafetyToolbox Talks

Oil and hydraulic fluids are handled daily, and it is easy to become complacent with an “it’s just oil” mindset. How you handle and store these fluids can create safety issues and even lead to regulatory enforcement, so a few practices keep it under control.

What Are the Rules for Storing Oil and Fluids?

Keep containers sealed, contained, and inspected.

  • Keep container lids or bungs secured whenever fluid is not actively being added or removed
  • Place containers that exceed 55 gallons on a containment system
  • Place barrels and filters on an oil containment system
  • Inspect containers daily and address leaks as soon as they are recognized
  • Clean up all spills immediately, even minor ones, since spills can cause injuries and fines

What Else Should You Watch For?

Handling oils and fluids can leave shoes, hands, and gloves slippery, so remove fluids from your feet and hands, especially before climbing onto a piece of machinery. Keep Safety Data Sheets accessible on site.
