Spending time in the sun has benefits, but long exposure can be harmful, and many workers are out in the sun to work, not for leisure. Reflected sunlight off equipment can be just as dangerous as direct sunlight, so protecting yourself matters.
How Do You Protect Yourself from the Sun?
Cover up, use sunscreen, and watch your skin over time.
- Limit sun exposure as much as possible, since reddening or tanning is a sign of skin damage and repeated exposure can cause chronic health problems
- Wear a head covering that also protects your ears and neck
- Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply frequently as directed
- Use a UV-blocking lip balm
- Wear UV-rated eye protection
- Drink adequate water to stay hydrated
- Check your skin regularly for unusual moles or spots, and consult a doctor if anything changes in shape, size, or color, or begins itching or bleeding
