How Do You Protect Your Hearing on the Job?

SafetyToolbox Talks

Noise-induced hearing loss can come from a single intense sound or from continuous loud, long-lasting noise, and even one serious exposure can cause permanent harm. That is why hearing protection matters every time you are around damaging noise, and any workplace that requires hearing protection devices should have a use and care program to keep them working reliably.

What Are the Types of Hearing Protection?

Different devices suit different noise levels and tasks.

  • Earmuffs
  • Reusable earplugs
  • Single-use earplugs

How Do You Inspect Hearing Protection?

Inspect hearing protection before each use so it is not damaged in a way that increases noise exposure.

  • Examine earmuff earcups, cushions, and inserts for cracks, splits, or other damage, replace cushions or inserts when they lose flexibility or are damaged, and replace the whole device when the headband no longer keeps the cushions firmly against the head
  • Inspect reusable earplugs for damage, dirt, deformation, discoloration, or extreme hardness, and discard them immediately if compromised or dirty
  • Examine single-use earplugs for dirt, damage, or extreme hardness before use, and discard them immediately if compromised
