How Do You Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls at Work?

SafetyToolbox Talks

Slips, trips, and falls account for a significant number of workplace injuries each year and can cause sprains, fractures, and even head trauma. Preventing them protects your health, keeps work moving, and avoids costly downtime.

What Causes Slips, Trips, and Falls?

Each one has its own common causes.

  • Slips from wet or oily surfaces, spills that have not been cleaned up, or unsuitable footwear
  • Trips from cluttered walkways, cables or hoses across paths, or poor lighting
  • Falls from working at heights without proper equipment, using ladders improperly, or uneven and ungraded ground

How Do You Prevent Them with Good Housekeeping?

Keep surfaces and walkways clean and clear.

  • Clean spills immediately and place warning signs around wet areas
  • Keep walkways clear of clutter and hazards
  • Maintain a clean work environment

What Else Helps Prevent Falls?

Footwear, workplace design, and equipment checks all play a part.

  • Wear shoes with appropriate grip and support, and mind your foot placement and the weather
  • Ensure adequate lighting in all areas
  • Secure cables and hoses to avoid tripping
  • Inspect ladders and scaffolds before use
  • Use fall protection gear when working at heights above four feet

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you see a hazard, report it or address it promptly.
