In extreme heat, we rightly focus on how temperature affects the body, with hydration, sun protection, and cooling breaks. But high temperatures also affect the equipment, with systems running much hotter than normal and creating hazards like thermal burns.
How Do You Protect Yourself from Hot Equipment?
Give the equipment time to cool and isolate energy before opening it.
- Be patient and allow equipment to cool adequately before working on it, using industrial fans and shaded areas to help dissipate heat
- Check the temperature of cooling and hydraulic systems, ideally with a temperature gun, to verify they are safe
- Wear the proper PPE when opening systems
- Follow the proper energy-isolation steps and slowly crack open systems for a controlled release of pressure, staying out of the line of fire
- Remember that patience is your biggest ally, since opening systems without adequate cooling is very hazardous
