September is Suicide Prevention Month, an opportunity to raise awareness, support one another, and build a safe, open environment. Suicide affects millions of people and touches every community, and everyone has a role in reducing stigma and offering support, which can save lives.
What Are the Signs Someone May Be Struggling?
The signs can show up in behavior, emotions, and how a person talks.
- Changes in behavior, such as withdrawal from social activities, changes in work performance, or a drop in engagement
- Emotional signs, such as persistent sadness, hopelessness, or extreme mood swings
- Communication that mentions feeling trapped, hopeless, or like a burden to others
How Can You Support Each Other?
Small, genuine actions make a real difference.
- Encourage open conversations about mental health and let colleagues know it is okay to talk about their feelings
- Be a good listener and show empathy without judgment
- Know the resources, including employee assistance programs, counseling services, and crisis hotlines, and share them openly
- Foster a culture of respect and support where team members look out for one another
Mental health is as important as physical health. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out for support. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24 hours a day by calling or texting 988.
